Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Plan and prepare to support the drilling process
   • Obtain, interpret and confirm work requirements
   • Access, interpret and apply documentation required to support drilling processes and confirm work activity is compliant
   • Identify and minimise environmental issues and potential hazards, and assess and address risks within scope of own role and according to workplace procedures
   • Select and wear personal protective equipment required for work activities
   • Obtain and interpret emergency procedures and identify steps required in case of fire, accident and other emergencies
   • Communicate with other personnel on site as required and confirm briefings and handover details are communicated and received as required
2. Prepare, operate and dismantle ancillary equipment
   • Set up and ancillary equipment according to operational requirements
   • Carry out services connections to and from equipment
   • Carry out required prestart and start-up checks on ancillary equipment
   • Run and monitor ancillary equipment
   • Dismantle ancillary equipment according to operational requirements
3. Clean all equipment at drilling site
   • Maintain clean working conditions according to workplace procedures and safety requirements
   • Clean and store vehicles routinely after use according to operational and safety requirements
   • Clean machines and equipment to schedule according to safety requirements
   • Confirm all cleaning equipment is kept in good working condition
4. Maintain levels of supplies
   • Check and communicate current stock levels to driller
   • Check on availability of consumable items in the workplace
   • Complete written record and stocktake counts
5. Perform and report on basic measurement and calculations
   • Carry out simple calculations and measurements according to operational requirements
   • Record data on reports according to operational requirements and workplace procedures
6. Carry out basic operator maintenance
   • Identify hazards and methods of minimising hazards when conducting maintenance in the field
   • Carry out minor repairs and replacements as required
   • Maintain and service machines and equipment to schedule
   • Overcome minor breakdowns and bogging using recovery techniques as required
   • Carry out housekeeping to workplace requirements

Performance Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate the ability to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including evidence of the ability to:

undertake the following tasks to support drilling processes on at least two occasions:

setting up and dismantling ancillary equipment

carrying out services connections to and from equipment

operating and monitoring ancillary equipment

identifying and reporting stock levels.

During the above, the candidate must:

locate and apply documentation required to support drilling processes

implement requirements, procedures and techniques for the completion of supporting drilling process, including:

operating cleaning equipment

applying basic operator servicing and maintenance of plant and vehicles

applying communication procedures

using lifting equipment

work with others to support drilling processes that meet required outcomes, including:

complying with reporting requirements and procedures

communicating with others to receive and clarify work instructions

communicating with others to meet coordination requirements prior to commencing and during work activities.

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must be able to demonstrate knowledge to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including knowledge of:

key policies, procedures and established requirements for supporting drilling processes, including those for:

work health and safety

emergencies

relevant environmental practices

equipment operation and maintenance

cleaning and storing equipment and machines

effective work practices

refuelling vehicles and equipment

communicating with other personnel throughout work activities

housekeeping

basic understanding of hydraulic and pneumatic systems

procedures for carrying out simple calculations and measurements, including using a tape measure

procedures for accessing, reading and interpreting graphical representation, including maps and diagrams

drilling team roles and objectives

basic geology.
